Your residence card is a very important document that proves your identity, so please be careful not to lose it. Also, be sure to carry it with you when you go out.

Notification of residence

Please submit the notification within 14 days after deciding your address.

Please go to the city hall or ward office of your place of residence with your residence card, fill out the "Residence Notification Form" and submit it to the counter.

Notification of change of residence

Please notify us within 14 days of address change.

  • Procedures at the former residence
    Please go to the city hall or ward office of your old residence with your residence card in hand and obtain a "Certificate of Move-out". (You can apply from two weeks before the day you move out.)
  • Procedures at new residence
    Please bring your residence card and the "Certificate of Move-out" you received at the city hall or ward office of your old place of residence, and go to the city hall or ward office of your new place of residence to complete the procedures.
    *Please complete the procedure within 14 days after moving to your new address.

Return of residence card

If you return to your home country after graduation, you must return your residence card. Returns must be made at the airport, etc. at the time of departure.

Obligation to carry residence card

You must always carry your residence card with you when you go out. If a police officer asks you to show your residence card, you are obligated to show it.

In case of loss or theft of residence card

In principle, please complete the procedure within 14 days from the date of loss or theft.

If your residence card is lost or stolen, please promptly follow the steps below to have it reissued.

  • First, file a "lost report" or "theft report" at the nearest police station or police box, and have a notification certificate issued.
  • Gather the necessary documents listed below, go to the Immigration Bureau, and submit the "Application for Reissuance of Residence Card".
    ・"Lost report certificate" or "theft report certificate" (issued by the police)
    ・1 photo (vertical 4cm x horizontal 3cm)
    ·passport
    ・Permission to engage in activity other than that permitted (limited to those with permission)
    *If you wish to have your name written in kanji on your residence card, please submit the "Application form for writing your name in kanji on your residence card" along with the "Application form for reissuance of your residence card."
